History of Hacktivism and Social War in the Cyberpunk Era by Galleani’s Ghost
Cyberpunk is not some far off future of sci-fi lore but the present reality. From the red fascist technototallitarian social credit score surveillance state of the People’s Republic of China, to the walled garden networks of North Korea or China’s Great Firewall, or Iran or Russian firewalls. Internet surveillance and censorship is rampant in the present day. With the security camera networks of the police and corporate actors in the Fourteen Eyes surveillance alliance, there is a complex web of cyberespionage and cyberwar in the present time.
As anarchists we must come to grasp with the necessity of cyberwarfare alongside other asymmetric social war. Hacktivism has a long intertwined history with anarchism. In 1998 the Electronic Disturbance Theater created a DdoS tool (electronic civil disobedience) in support of the Zapatista rebels in Chiapas, Mexico. From Chelsea Manning to Jeremy Hammond and ever hacktivist who has fought against the state and capital, anarchy must embrace the cyberpunk era. Whether or not you are anti-civilization or not its essential to grasp these things in this age of mass surveillance.
Although there has been a large decrease in activity since the early 2010s due to repressions of many prominent hacktivists, lately there has been a resurgence. During the height of the George Floyd uprisings, Anonymous leaked 269.1 GB of internal police data that was produced between August 1996 and June 2020, by more than 200 law enforcement agencies and access fusion centers. It revealed mass surveillance against radicals across the country.
Back in the 80s even the WANK (Worms Against Nuclear Killers) hack against NASA days before the launch of a NASA Space Shuttle Galileo. This was in conjunction with protests by the anti-nuclear movement regarding the use of the plutonium-based power modules in Galileo. The protesters contended that if this shuttle blew up as Challenger did three years earlier in 1986, the plutonium spilled would cause widespread death to residents of Florida.
Hacktivism has always been a part of anarchy.
